Course Topic: History
Course Topic: Nature, Science, & Technology
Description: This course, heavily illustrated
with images, relates how Protestant Americans
have interacted with science since the 18th
century. Emphasis is given to ideas about natural
history, biblical interpretation, and how the
fundamentalist-modernist controversy a century
ago still shapes the conversation today.
Description: This course will share tips for
attracting birds to your yard and will teach easy
steps to use to begin identifying the birds that
visit. You will learn feeding and habitat ideas and
identification techniques for about 30 backyard
birds that are common to south-central PA.
Recommendations for field guides and binoculars
will be shared, but if you already have binoculars
and a field guide, bring them to the first session.
Instructor: Edward B. (“Ted”) Davis, Professor
Emeritus of the History of Science at Messiah
University, has written many books and articles
about Christianity and science in the Scientific
Revolution and modern America, most recently
“Protestant Modernist Pamphlets: Science and
Religion in the Scopes Era” (Johns Hopkins, 2024).
He was an advisor for exhibits at the National
Museum of American History and the Museum of
the Bible.
Instructor: Linette Mansberger is an amateur
photographer who enjoys traveling the world to
photograph nature. She uses her photographs to
create and present nature programs for various
organizations throughout the state. She is the

of Gettysburg.

Course Topic: Nature, Science, & Technology
Description: Fracking is a modern process used
to release natural gas and other hydrocarbons
from deep, underground rock formations.
Although PA has been drilling for natural gas
since the 1880s, hydraulic fracturing has only
been widely used since around 2008. You may
be wondering, what exactly is fracking, how is it
performed, and where in PA is it used?
